Compositor estadounidense de origen suizo. Dirigió y enseñó en el conservatorio de Ginebra antes de trasladarse a EE.UU. en 1916; allí se desempeñó como director del conservatorio de San Francisco (1925–30) y enseñó en la Universidad de California, Berkeley (1942–52). Trabajó en los lenguajes tonal, atonal y serial (See also sistema tonal; atonalidad; serialismo). Sus obras, muchas de ellas inspiradas en temas judíos, comprenden la ópera Macbeth (1910), Schelomo para violonchelo y orquesta (1916), los grandes trabajos corales America (1926) y Avodath hakodesh (1933), y un concierto para violín (1938).
